Held Oct. 24 in Ram Hall, the White Coat Ceremony marked the students’ transition into the clinical phase of their graduate studies, where they will complete more than 600 clinical hours while continuing coursework that prepares them to serve as Family Nurse Practitioners.

In a moment unique to the Christ-centered university, each student recited the Advanced Practice Nurse Pledge — written by UM nursing faculty — committing to serve patients with excellence, humility and compassion rooted in faith.

Nursing as a Calling

“As our Family Nurse Practitioner students step into clinical practice, they are embracing a role that blends high-level skill with a heart for ministry through health care,” said Dr. Charles Smith, University of Mobile president. “They are answering a calling to serve people where faith and healing meet.”

Dr. Jessica Garner, dean of the Celia Wallace College of Health Professions and graduate dean of the School of Nursing, added, “At the University of Mobile, we see nursing as more than a profession — it’s a calling. The pledge reminds our students that the knowledge and skills they gain are gifts to be used for God’s glory and the good of others.”

The White Coat Ceremony included a keynote address by Dr. Jason Lee, newly appointed provost and vice president for academic administration at the University of Mobile. Previously, Lee served as professor of theological studies and director of the Center for Biblical Integration at Cedarville University.

Dr. Melinda McGaughy, associate professor of nursing, delivered the White Coat address to an audience that included family and friends of the honored students. The UM ensemble Sofree provided entertainment.

University of Mobile School of Nursing Named #1 Nursing Program in Alabama https://umobile.edu/2025/09/university-of-mobile-school-of-nursing-named-1-nursing-program-in-alabama/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 16:00:52 +0000 https://umobile.edu/?p=109792 MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile is celebrating another milestone of excellence as the UM School of Nursing is named the #1 Nursing Program in Alabama by RegisteredNursing.org.

With nursing job openings expected to rise 8% by 2030, Alabama is considered one of the best states for launching a nursing career and seeking job security in the healthcare field, says RegisteredNursing.org in its 2026 Best Nursing Schools in Alabama ranking.

UM’s top-ranked programs place students at the center of this opportunity, providing an academically strong, faith-driven foundation that equips graduates to step confidently into a variety of healthcare settings.

President Affirms Mission and Momentum

“Being recognized as the #1 Nursing Program in Alabama is both an honor and a responsibility,” said University of Mobile President Charles Smith.

“It affirms the excellence of our students and faculty, but more importantly, it highlights the mission that drives us. At the University of Mobile, we are preparing nurses who not only meet the highest professional standards but also embody Christ-centered compassion in every patient interaction.

“This recognition reflects our calling to multiply Kingdom leaders who will bring healing and hope to the world.”

UM’s Nursing Program Earns State’s Top Spot

Sally Worthington, outreach coordinator for RegisteredNursing.org, said UM’s recognition as the #1 Nursing Program in Alabama is more than just a ranking.

“It reflects the daily work faculty, staff and students put into creating a strong academic experience, one that prepares graduates to step into nursing careers with confidence,” Worthington said.

RegisteredNursing.org presents the definitive ranking of the best nursing schools in Alabama, focusing exclusively on NCLEX pass rates to provide future nurses with clear, data-driven insights. This comprehensive analysis highlights top nursing programs based on their ability to prepare students for successful licensure outcomes.

This top distinction recognizes UM’s Associate Degree in Nursing, Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs for their outstanding performance in preparing graduates for the NCLEX licensing exam — the gold standard for entering the nursing profession.

With 100% NCLEX pass rates and 100% job placement, UM’s nursing programs consistently deliver graduates who are fully prepared and in demand.

Faith & Faculty Commitment Drives UM’s Distinction

Dr. Sarah Witherspoon, dean of the UM School of Nursing, said the ranking reflects the daily work of a team fully dedicated to helping students succeed in the nursing profession and throughout their lives.

“Our nursing program combines rigorous academics with extensive hands-on learning and a foundation of Christian values. We prepare nurses who are not only highly skilled, but who approach their patients with compassion, integrity and a deep sense of calling,” Witherspoon said.

The UM School of Nursing is part of the Celia Wallace College of Health Professions, which also includes the School of Nurse Anesthesia and the School of Health and Sports Science.

At UM, students can pursue a seamless educational journey from ADN to BSN to a variety of master’s degrees and doctoral degrees, gaining the knowledge, experience and spiritual grounding to make a difference in healthcare and in the world.

“We give God all the glory for this honor, and I am so thankful for the exceptional faculty who pour their knowledge, experience and heart for Christ into every student,” Witherspoon said.

Excellence Validated by National Accreditation

In June 2025, UM’s School of Nursing earned the maximum 10-year accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) — a prestigious affirmation of quality that covers its bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs through 2035.

The ADN program can be completed in just five semesters and is a great next step for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) ready to advance their nursing careers, said Dr. Sarah Witherspoon, dean of UM’s School of Nursing.

“The Associate Degree in Nursing also provides a strong foundation for students beginning a career in health care,” she added, noting opportunities for ADN graduates to continue their education through UM’s online bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs.

Witherspoon said every graduate of UM’s recent Associate Degree in Nursing class passed the NCLEX licensure exam on their first attempt and received job offers upon graduation.

“At the University of Mobile, nursing students benefit from a close-knit, personalized learning experience where faculty genuinely know each student by name. Our ADN program combines academic excellence and faith-based values to equip students for both immediate employment and a meaningful calling in healthcare,” she said.

Applicants must hold an unencumbered RN license and have earned their ADN from an accredited institution – no GPA or ACT requirement is needed.

“Our fully online RN to BSN program is structured to offer flexibility for working professionals while maintaining the rigorous academic quality that prepares our graduates for advanced practice and leadership roles in nursing,” Witherspoon said.

University of Mobile President Charles Smith to Graduates: Anchor Your Life in Christ  https://umobile.edu/2025/05/university-of-mobile-president-charles-smith-to-graduates-anchor-your-life-in-christ/ Mon, 12 May 2025 14:11:04 +0000 https://umobile.edu/?p=108183 MOBILE, Ala. – In a powerful address during University of Mobile’s 2025 commencement, President Charles Smith urged graduates to “anchor your life and joy in the wisdom of God’s Word and the unshakable love of Christ.”

“This degree represents more than your academic success,” Smith told over 300 graduates in a ceremony held May 10 on the university’s Great Commission Lawn. “It is a testament to your perseverance, discipline and sacrifice – qualities that will serve you well as you step into an exciting new chapter of life.”

Rooted in Proverbs 3:5-6, Smith challenged the Class of 2025 to: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”

Four Truths Taught at UM

In his message, Smith reminded graduates of four truths that serve as the foundation of everything taught at the University of Mobile.

  • God loves you – “Not a smarter, holier, more accomplished version of you – the real you,” he said. “The question is not whether God loves you. The cross makes that clear. The real question is, will you trust Him to be who He promises to be?”
  • God has given you profound gifts – “Your very life is a gift… the talents you cultivated here at the University of Mobile are gifts of God’s grace.” He added, “There will be times… when you doubt your abilities… In those moments… steady yourself with these truths: God loves you and has given you profound gifts.”
  • God has called you to steward your life and gifts for His glory and the good of the world – “While the temptation is strong to use them for ourselves, our gifts are meant to bless others and point them to Christ. This is where you will find life’s deepest joys and greatest impact,” he said.
  • Only Christ can satisfy your deepest longings – “As you enter this next chapter, commit to joining a strong local church. Immerse yourself in God’s Word. Cultivate godly friendships. Start a family. Serve your community. Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God. And as you do, commit to embracing our Great Commission Tradition here at the University of Mobile,” he said.

“We are proud to call you an alumnus of the University of Mobile,” Smith said in closing. “Keep the faith, stay the course and do not forget all that you learned here. Your Great Commission journey is just beginning, and we will be cheering you on every step of the way.”

Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year Award

The Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year award is named after immediate past president Dr. Lonnie Burnett, the 5thpresident of the University of Mobile. A 1979 graduate of UM, Burnett dedicated over 40 years of service to education in southwest Alabama, including 20 years faithfully serving the university as instructor, faculty member, dean and eventually president. Burnett exemplifies what it means to be an alumnus of the University of Mobile, living with godly character and seeking to serve the Lord in all aspects of life.

The Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year award is given to a graduate of the University of Mobile who exemplifies those qualities in the highest regard. The 2025 Alumni of the Year is Teresa Williamson, president of Roberts Brothers Inc.

Williamson is a 1990 graduate of the University of Mobile with a Bachelor of Science in business management and finance. She has served the greater Mobile community with distinction, Christ-like character and an unmatched godly integrity.

“Whether it is volunteering in the community, engagement through the Mobile Chamber of Commerce, her involvement in and through her local church, or her leadership in real estate, Teresa is an example that all UM alumni and current students can look up to,” said President Smith as he presented the award.

Faculty of the Year Award

For the first time in the university’s history, a new award was presented at commencement:  the Faculty of the Year award.

The inaugural Faculty of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Julie Hughes, assistant professor of nursing and simulation lab coordinator for the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice in the School of Nursing, Celia Wallace College of Health Professions. Using high-fidelity simulators, Hughes designs intricate simulations for students that allow them to experience real-world medical scenarios as they prepare for healthcare careers.

She recently brought the Blessing of the Hands to the School of Nursing’s Pinning Ceremony. This component acknowledges the responsibility that nurses shoulder in delivering care and compassion while reminding them they are never alone in their duties as Jesus empowers them to be instruments of His love and healing.

Presenting the award, President Smith said, “Dr. Hughes points students and colleagues alike to Christ. In doing so, she has a profound impact on the lives of her students and their future patients.”

Trustee Resolution Honors Dr. Roger Breland

Dr. John Roger Breland, retiring executive director of the Roger Breland Center for Performing Arts, was honored with a resolution from the Board of Trustees celebrating his lifetime of music, ministry and mentorship.

For 31 years, Breland served as founder and director of TRUTH – one of the first internationally successful contemporary Christian recording groups. For the past 23 years, he played a pivotal role in shaping the University of Mobile’s Alabama School of the Arts.

Throughout his career, Breland spread the Gospel message across the world, traveling more than 4 million miles across 50 nations, presenting over 12,000 concerts and producing 100 albums. Along the way, he mentored generations of young men and women who today are successful leaders in the music industry and churches around the world.

His legacy at the University of Mobile includes founding VOICES of Mobile, launching the beloved Christmas Spectacular, expanding the Alabama School of the Arts, securing funding for the Fisher/Brewer Recording Studio, and establishing the Roger and Linda Breland Endowed Scholarship.

University of Mobile Family Nurse Practitioner Students Celebrate Success with White Coat Ceremony https://umobile.edu/2024/11/university-of-mobile-family-nurse-practitioner-students-celebrate-success-with-white-coat-ceremony/ Wed, 06 Nov 2024 15:27:18 +0000 https://umobile.edu/?p=107156 MOBILE, Ala. – Nineteen aspiring Family Nurse Practitioners in the University of Mobile School of Nursing recently donned their white coats, marking a pivotal step in their journey toward advanced practice. In a powerful moment unique to the Christian university, each student took a pledge that set them apart, affirming their commitment not only to excellence in patient care but also to a calling shaped by faith and compassion.

“I will endeavor to be a good steward of my knowledge and skills and of all those resources granted to me by God, understanding that my call to this vocation is for the glory of His Kingdom,” they pledged.

As they recited the Advanced Practice Nurse Pledge, these future practitioners affirmed a commitment to lifelong learning, community leadership and person-centered health care.

A Calling that Honors God

Dr. Jessica Garner, graduate dean of the School of Nursing in the university’s Celia Wallace College of Health Professions, said the original pledge was written two years ago by faculty.

“Our goal in creating this pledge was to instill a sense of purpose and responsibility that goes beyond clinical skill,” Garner said. “We want our students to see their role as advanced practice nurses as a calling – one rooted in compassion, integrity and a commitment to serve others with humility.

“This pledge reflects the values we hold dear at UM, encouraging our students to approach each patient with empathy and to view their vocation as a way to honor God’s work through them.”

White Coat Recipients for 2024

The White Coat Ceremony, held Oct. 25 at the Lonnie and Lynne Burnett Event Center, marks the students’ transition to the next portion of their training, which will include clinical rotations. Students will complete more than 600 clinical hours and receive additional course training necessary to assume the Family Nurse Practitioner role.

The ceremony featured remarks from UM President Charles Smith and Campus Pastor Jared Baria, with a musical presentation from the UM ensemble Sofree. Dr. Melinda McGaughy, associate professor of nursing, joined Garner in delivering additional remarks and presenting the white coats.

University of Mobile Advanced Practice Nurse Pledge

The University of Mobile’s Advanced Practice Nurse Pledge follows:

I publicly acknowledge and accept the privileges and responsibilities given to me today as an advanced practice nurse in training and dedicate myself to this pledge:

I will respect the scientific work of those practitioners, scientists, and researchers in whose steps I walk, and I will gladly share knowledge with others.

I will recognize my responsibility as a leader and advocate in my community to support and participate in actions to improve high-quality, person-centered health care for all.

I will respect the autonomy, privacy, diversity, culture, and past experiences of my patients, and serve with empathy and kindness.

Knowing my own limitations and those of medicine, I commit myself to a lifelong journey of learning to cure, relieve, and comfort with humility and compassion.

I will endeavor to be a good steward of my knowledge and skills and of all those resources granted to me by God, understanding that my call to this vocation is for the glory of His Kingdom.

I make these promises solemnly, freely, and upon my honor.
