Southern Baptist Convention leaders, pastors and seminarians, plus a panel discussion featuring Christian business leaders, round out the semester’s chapel program that starts Aug. 20.

‘See and Savor Jesus Christ’

“At the University of Mobile, our greatest desire is to help students see and savor Jesus Christ — to invite them to study and trust His Word, and to challenge them to make an impact for Christ. Our weekly chapel services help us do exactly that,” said University of Mobile President Charles Smith.

Smith begins his second year as president of the Baptist-affiliated university that exists “For Christ & His Kingdom” with a mission of multiplying Kingdom leaders for the glory of God and the good of the world.

“Each week, the UM community gathers to fellowship, pray, sing and study God’s Word. It is one of the most vital things we do — not only because we hear the truth of God’s Word, but because we do so together, in Christian community, surrounded by like-minded students and colleagues who share a common faith and purpose,” he said.

‘Gifted and Godly Bible Teachers’

Under Smith’s leadership, the university’s chapel program is drawing standing-room-only crowds to experience impactful speakers and heartfelt worship led by The Worship Collective student worship team.

“I am grateful that our students, staff, and faculty will have the opportunity to hear from these gifted and godly Bible teachers,” Smith said.

“August can’t get here soon enough. There is no question about it. It’s the best part of my week,” he added.

Kathy Dean

Kathy Dean uses her passion for storytelling and “playing with words” to share the stories of people, place and purpose that make the University of Mobile unique. As associate vice president for university communications, she manages media relations, edits the TorchLight alumni magazine, and oversees university communications. A former award-winning journalist, she is a two-time recipient of the Baptist Communicators Association grand prize for feature writing. Kathy and her husband, Chuck, live with three extremely loud miniature schnauzers.

“This degree represents more than your academic success,” Smith told over 300 graduates in a ceremony held May 10 on the university’s Great Commission Lawn. “It is a testament to your perseverance, discipline and sacrifice – qualities that will serve you well as you step into an exciting new chapter of life.”

Rooted in Proverbs 3:5-6, Smith challenged the Class of 2025 to: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”

Four Truths Taught at UM

In his message, Smith reminded graduates of four truths that serve as the foundation of everything taught at the University of Mobile.

• God loves you – “Not a smarter, holier, more accomplished version of you – the real you,” he said. “The question is not whether God loves you. The cross makes that clear. The real question is, will you trust Him to be who He promises to be?”
• God has given you profound gifts – “Your very life is a gift… the talents you cultivated here at the University of Mobile are gifts of God’s grace.” He added, “There will be times… when you doubt your abilities… In those moments… steady yourself with these truths: God loves you and has given you profound gifts.”
• God has called you to steward your life and gifts for His glory and the good of the world – “While the temptation is strong to use them for ourselves, our gifts are meant to bless others and point them to Christ. This is where you will find life’s deepest joys and greatest impact,” he said.
• Only Christ can satisfy your deepest longings – “As you enter this next chapter, commit to joining a strong local church. Immerse yourself in God’s Word. Cultivate godly friendships. Start a family. Serve your community. Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God. And as you do, commit to embracing our Great Commission Tradition here at the University of Mobile,” he said.

“We are proud to call you an alumnus of the University of Mobile,” Smith said in closing. “Keep the faith, stay the course and do not forget all that you learned here. Your Great Commission journey is just beginning, and we will be cheering you on every step of the way.”

Weaver Awards Presented

The University of Mobile presented its top two student awards, the William K. Weaver Jr. Excellence Award and the Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Excellence Award, to Logan Lipke of Orange Beach, Alabama, and Anna Olsen of Semmes, Alabama. The awards are presented to the most outstanding graduating male and female seniors for exemplifying the university’s mission through scholarship, Christian character, leadership and service. The awards are named for the founding president and first lady of then-Mobile College.

Lipke graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in music – composition. He received the President’s Scholastic Award and Area Award in Music.

Olsen graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in education. She is an Honors with Thesis Program graduate and received the President’s Scholastic Award and Area Award in Communication.

Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year Award

The Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year award is named after immediate past president Dr. Lonnie Burnett, the 5^thpresident of the University of Mobile. A 1979 graduate of UM, Burnett dedicated over 40 years of service to education in southwest Alabama, including 20 years faithfully serving the university as instructor, faculty member, dean and eventually president. Burnett exemplifies what it means to be an alumnus of the University of Mobile, living with godly character and seeking to serve the Lord in all aspects of life. 

The Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year award is given to a graduate of the University of Mobile who exemplifies those qualities in the highest regard. The 2025 Alumni of the Year is Teresa Williamson, president of Roberts Brothers Inc. 

Williamson is a 1990 graduate of the University of Mobile with a Bachelor of Science in business management and finance. She has served the greater Mobile community with distinction, Christ-like character and an unmatched godly integrity. 

“Whether it is volunteering in the community, engagement through the Mobile Chamber of Commerce, her involvement in and through her local church, or her leadership in real estate, Teresa is an example that all UM alumni and current students can look up to,” said President Smith as he presented the award.

Faculty of the Year Award

For the first time in the university’s history, a new award was presented at commencement:  the Faculty of the Year award. 

The inaugural Faculty of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Julie Hughes, assistant professor of nursing and simulation lab coordinator for the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice in the School of Nursing, Celia Wallace College of Health Professions. Using high-fidelity simulators, Hughes designs intricate simulations for students that allow them to experience real-world medical scenarios as they prepare for healthcare careers.

She recently brought the Blessing of the Hands to the School of Nursing’s Pinning Ceremony. This component acknowledges the responsibility that nurses shoulder in delivering care and compassion while reminding them they are never alone in their duties as Jesus empowers them to be instruments of His love and healing. 

Presenting the award, President Smith said, “Dr. Hughes points students and colleagues alike to Christ. In doing so, she has a profound impact on the lives of her students and their future patients.”

Trustee Resolution Honors Dr. Roger Breland

Dr. John Roger Breland, retiring executive director of the Roger Breland Center for Performing Arts, was honored with a resolution from the Board of Trustees celebrating his lifetime of music, ministry and mentorship.

For 31 years, Breland served as founder and director of TRUTH – one of the first internationally successful contemporary Christian recording groups. For the past 23 years, he played a pivotal role in shaping the University of Mobile’s Alabama School of the Arts. 

Throughout his career, Breland spread the Gospel message across the world, traveling more than 4 million miles across 50 nations, presenting over 12,000 concerts and producing 100 albums. Along the way, he mentored generations of young men and women who today are successful leaders in the music industry and churches around the world.

His legacy at the University of Mobile includes founding VOICES of Mobile, launching the beloved Christmas Spectacular, expanding the Alabama School of the Arts, securing funding for the Fisher/Brewer Recording Studio, and establishing the Roger and Linda Breland Endowed Scholarship.

Kathy Dean

Kathy Dean uses her passion for storytelling and “playing with words” to share the stories of people, place and purpose that make the University of Mobile unique. As associate vice president for university communications, she manages media relations, edits the TorchLight alumni magazine, and oversees university communications. A former award-winning journalist, she is a two-time recipient of the Baptist Communicators Association grand prize for feature writing. Kathy and her husband, Chuck, live with three extremely loud miniature schnauzers.

In each room, young women can be seen leaning over long mirrors to reapply lipstick or put the finishing touches to their pristinely styled hair. Encouraging words are passed between them as the time grows closer for the ladies to step on stage. Despite the nerves present, there is a sense of fun and camaraderie shared. 

They have been preparing for this moment for two months, and their hard work is evident as each one navigates the stage with grace and poise. At the end of the night, with the winner for Miss UM seconds away from being announced, the audience grows silent in anticipation.

Then, to the backdrop of celebratory shouts and applause, Chesed Turner steps into the spotlight and is crowned Miss University of Mobile 2025.

Turner, a junior musical theater major from Niceville, Florida, will carry on the legacy of serving as a representative for the Christian university in the upcoming year.

“It almost doesn’t feel real,” said Turner the next day. “I woke up this morning and saw the crown in my box and was like, ‘What is that doing there?’”

Created to Create

In her time as Miss University of Mobile, Turner aims to grow the program of Miss UM and her platform, “Created to Create,” which focuses on bringing different outlets of expression and creativity to both the campus and its students. 

Besides the mental and physical benefits that the act of being creative brings, Turner also highlights how interwoven it is into humanity.

“We know that God is our Creator, but we often forget that He is creative,” said Turner. “And to have Him as our Creator, to be created in His image, means that we are creative ourselves. That is a part of His very nature, and therefore, it’s a part of ours.”

Beyond these plans, Turner’s primary goal in life and as Miss UM is to be an example of God’s love to others. 

“The judges asked me what my name means in my interview, and it means ‘God’s eternal lovingkindness,’” said Turner. “My name is literally a testament of who Christ is and my goal in life is to exemplify that and exemplify it well for God’s glory.” 

Award Recipients

Also earning honors at the Miss University of Mobile competition on Jan. 31 were:

• Jaycie Tungett from Leakesville, Mississippi, who placed first runner-up and won the People’s Choice Award. She received $3,350 in scholarships.
• Caitlyn Ozee from Bourbonnais, Illinois, placed second runner-up. She received $2,000 in scholarships.
• Kennedy Bradford from Vernon, Alabama, placed third runner-up. Bradford received $1,000 in scholarships.
• Allegra Fuller from Mobile, Alabama, was the recipient of the Talent Award and Miss Congeniality. She received $850 in scholarships.

A Fond Farewell

The audience bid a fond farewell to Miss University of Mobile of 2024, AnnaKatherine Bell, with a standing ovation after her humous and heartwarming performance of “Taylor, the Latte Boy” by Kristin Chenoweth. 

Bell will leave the university with one final and visible reminder of her “Growth Project” by planting daylilies in front of Martin Hall.

Noelle Foster

Noelle Foster is an intern in the Office of Marketing and Public Relations at the University of Mobile. She is a full-time student in the College of Arts and Sciences, where she is pursuing a degree in Communication with a concentration in Journalism and Broadcasting along with a minor in History. When she is not studying or researching, Noelle enjoys going on walks, listening to music, and spending time with her family and friends.

The free event filled with family-friendly festivities will include photo with Santa and more. Current students will participate in a snowless snowman building competition beginning at 5:15 p.m. Alumni, faculty and staff will judge the competition for best snowman at 6:15 p.m. Students who would like to participate should view Student Life social media pages to sign up.

Kids of all ages will enjoy a winter wonderland inflatable, hot chocolate, Christmas cookies and a magical snowfall. Throughout the event, guests will enjoy live music by university students. Guests also may browse the Alumni & Friends Christmas Market featuring great Christmas gift ideas from the small businesses of alumni and current students.

Karlie Welch is an intern in the Office for Alumni and Advancement. She is a full-time student majoring in Communication and minoring in Music. Karlie spends her time outside of the university as a makeup artist and can often be seen behind a camera photographing many weddings. In her free time she enjoys shopping and traveling with her friends and family.

Voter turnout exceeded expectations, demonstrating the students’ enthusiasm for shaping the future of their institution and the university’s commitment to student representation and engagement.

The awards were presented during graduation ceremonies held on the university campus May 6, 2023.

The William K. Weaver Jr. Excellence Award is presented to the most outstanding graduating male senior for excellence in exemplifying the mission of the University of Mobile. Selection is made by a secret vote of the faculty based on scholarship, Christian character, leadership and service. The award presented to Lenjamin Cory Anderson II is named for the university’s founding president and is considered the highest recognition possible for a University of Mobile male senior.

Cory Anderson is described by his professors in the Alabama School of the Arts as a servant leader who is passionate about the Lord. He pursues his calling with excellence, having made the Dean’s or President’s lists throughout his college career.

This multi-talented student was cast in a lead role in the Fall 2022 production of “The Sound of Music.” He serves faithfully at Rise Church in Mobile as a keyboard player on the worship arts team and is involved in planning special services and events.

Anderson is a godly father and husband, often working two full-time jobs to provide for his family while studying for classes. A former student worker now on staff as coordinator of academic services in the Alabama School of the Arts, he has assisted faculty members and led many administrative practices for the National Association of Schools of Music 10-year review.

Anderson graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance.

The Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Excellence Award is presented to the most outstanding graduating female senior for excellence in exemplifying the mission of University of Mobile. Selection is made by a secret vote of the faculty based on scholarship, Christian character, leadership and service. The award presented to Jamie Danielle Peters is named for B Weaver, the university’s first “First Lady,” and is considered the highest recognition possible for a University of Mobile female senior.

Jamie Peters is described by her professors in the College of Arts and Sciences as an excellent embodiment of Christian values who has made it her mission to honor God through fellowship, discipleship and service.

She maintained a 4.0 grade point average in the rigorous Honors Program, served as a teaching assistant in the English Department and led the university’s Gamma Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta Honor Society. She was a tutor in the writing center and assistant director of the UM Brain Battle scholar’s bowl competition for high school students. In addition, she served as an adult choir leader in several local churches and volunteered for Vacation Bible Schools.

With her exceptional writing skills and passion for literature, she produced a thesis paper that her professors called “extraordinary.”

Jamie Peters graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English, Honors Program with Thesis, and received the President’s Scholastic Achievement Award.

When Foley prepared to take his seat and watch the May 6 graduates receive their diplomas, he was in for a surprise. As over 3,000 graduates and families watched the video screen on the Dr. Fred and Sue Lackey Great Commission Lawn, the university unveiled the name of the university’s newest residence hall: “Mark Foley Hall.”

University of Mobile President Lonnie Burnett made the surprise announcement on the 25^th anniversary year of Foley’s selection as the 3^rd president of the Christ-centered university.

“The highest honor a university can give an individual is to place their name on a building. Today, Dr. Mark Foley joins the illustrious names of Weaver, Bedsole, May and Martin in the history of this university,” said Burnett, who serves as the 5^th president of UM.

After the ceremony, Foley said he was humbled by the honor.

The naming of Mark Foley Hall “is an incredibly humbling surprise, but the real story is in the lives of the men and women who built it and the men and women who lived in it. I just happened to be here to see it,” Foley said.

Formerly known as “The Timbers,” the three-story residence hall was built during Foley’s 18-year tenure as university president. The nearly 40,000-square foot building includes 24 apartments housing four students each. 

It was part of a total $44.8 million investment in capital projects during Foley’s service as president. Other major projects were the Weaver Hall Enhancement Project that gave the university’s historic first building its iconic look with a pitched roof, portico and cupola; two more residence halls; a professional recording student; Ram Hall auditorium and more. 

A time capsule is sealed in the lobby floor of the residence hall. Set to be opened in 2061 on the 100^th anniversary of the university, the time capsule features memorabilia from the first 50 years of university life. Among the items to be revealed in 2061 are 60 photos featuring the groundbreaking of Mobile College, original faculty and staff, the first graduating class in 1967, the 50^th anniversary faculty in 2011, the 2012 President’s Cabinet, Miss UM 2012, the 2012-2013 SGA president, and Dr. Mark Foley at the time capsule dedication in November 2012. 

Also included are the first yearbook of Mobile College in 1964, an Urban Plunge t-shirt, a stuffed ram mascot, a UMobile class of 2015 ring, a tie chain worn by founding president Dr. William K. Weaver Jr., a cell phone used in the 1990s, a Dr. Mark Foley twelve23 Movement CD, an NAIA uniform patch, October 2012 Board of Trustees booklet, ‘It’s Time’ book by Dr. Mark Foley, a University of Mobile lapel pin, a Voices of Mobile flash drive, a UMobile shaker, Mobile College Homecoming 1987 mini megaphone, a Weaver Hall ornament, a Vision 2000 coaster, and various promotional brochures used throughout the history of the University of Mobile.

Emily Deal

Emily Deal is the social media specialist for the marketing and public relations office at the University of Mobile. Emily’s background is in advertising where she solidified her skills in design, quality assurance, and art direction. She earned a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in graphic design from UM in 2016. She is a devoted member of Mars Hill Church where she volunteers with the children’s ministry most Sundays. Some of her favorite things are wildflowers, live music and, most importantly, dogs.

The Present’s Scholastic Achievement Award was presented to baccalaureate students who have attained the highest grade point average while completing a four-year degree at the University of Mobile. This year, 19 graduates earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average during their academic careers.

Academic Achievement Awards were presented to outstanding graduates in each college and school who were recognized for academic accomplishment, service, scholarship and Christian character. 

The university’s two top student awards, the William K. Weaver Jr. Excellence Award and the Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Excellence Award, will be announced during graduation ceremonies on May 6. Approximately 330 students will receive degrees at commencement, which will be held on campus.

The graduation ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on the Dr. Fred and Sue Lackey Great Commission Lawn.

Now, as a senior at the University of Mobile, I can look back on my time here and truly see that it is not the place in particular that has changed my life, but rather the people it has brought me. That being said, these are five groups of people who have impacted not only my time at UM, but my life as a whole. 

University Ambassadors

Through working with the University of Mobile Ambassadors, I have not only found a new confidence in leading but have learned from the people I serve with about the importance of leading by example and listening to those I work with. These fellow students have taught me to serve the university with open hands and have pushed me to be the best version of myself, no matter the circumstance. 

Professors/Advisors

My professors and advisors, whether that be in communication classes or music lessons, have not only given me a high-quality education but also have gotten to know me personally. They truly embody the university’s slogan of “Know and Be Known” because, each time I enter their classroom, I know that I am not just a number to them. They have given me wisdom and encouragement in more ways than I could count, building me up on the good days, and supporting me on the days where things were hard. 

Alabama School of the Arts

Being a part of ASOTA has allowed me to be surrounded with people who are not only incredibly gifted but who also have pointed me to Jesus through the expression of God-given gifts. Watching my peers lead others in worship, perform in various shows, or even seeing the behind-the-scenes work inspires me to give whatever my gifts may be back to the Lord to glorify Him. This group of people have helped me grow in humility and open-mindedness while pushing me to my best potential.

University Ministries

Serving on this team has grown me in my walk with Jesus and given me opportunity to share that with those I meet. I have been able to be discipled in a way I have never experienced while also discipling others at the same time. These friends have pushed me toward the Father in service and in truth, and they prayerfully walk alongside me each day. 

Friends/Community

My friends and community at UM have been the most intentional friends I have ever had the privilege of knowing. They build me up and encourage me, pray for me, and keep me accountable. They love me in a way that looks like Jesus and, while it is not always perfect, these friends have taught me the true meaning of friendship, pushing me to extend that to others. 

Overall, the University of Mobile is a special place, but the people here are what have changed my life completely. I could not be more grateful that the Lord led me here. 

Claire Wood

Claire Wood is a senior Strategic Communications major with a minor in Music. Along with interning for the Marketing and Communications Office at UM during her final semester, Claire is heavily involved in many areas around campus including the Alabama School of the Arts, Student Ambassadors and the Campus Ministries Team. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling and anything musical.
