University of Mobile Awarded Alabama Reading Initiative Grant to Strengthen Literacy Instruction

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile School of Education received an Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) Program Improvement Grant from the Alabama State Department of Education to enhance teacher preparation and strengthen literacy education in Alabama classrooms.

The grant, awarded through the Alabama Reading Initiative under the direction of ALSDE Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey, supports educational preparation programs implementing the Alabama Literacy Act, a statewide effort to ensure every child reads proficiently by the end of third grade.

“At the University of Mobile, we’re deeply committed to preparing educators who teach with excellence and compassion. By immersing our students in best practices aligned with the Alabama Literacy Act, we are ensuring every UM graduate enters the classroom ready to foster literacy success in every child,” said Dr. Ashley Milner, dean of the School of Education.

Grant Funds Hands-On Literacy Tools for Future Teachers

The grant fund sthe purchase of hands-on, multimodal instructional materials and resources for teacher candidates enrolled in literacy courses and field experiences. These resources – such as alphabet arcs, Elkonin box floor mats, magnetic letters, and hand mirrors – will help future teachers learn and apply strategies rooted in the science of reading, enabling them to teach literacy through interactive and evidence-based methods.

“This grant will enhance the implementation of the Alabama Literacy Act in our schools by preparing our teacher candidates to utilize research-based, foundational strategies steeped in the science of reading,” said Dr. Kelly Lomax, assistant professor of education and National Board Certified Teacher who secured the grant.

“We’re equipping our students not just with knowledge, but with the tools and confidence to make an immediate impact in their future classrooms.”

The grant builds on a previous ARI award that enabled Lomax to provide teacher candidates with high-quality children’s literature tied to the four strands of social studies, promoting English language arts integration across the curriculum.

Courses Aligned with Alabama Literacy Standards

In addition to materials purchased through the grant, UM’s School of Education recently revised its literacy courses in collaboration with Dr. Lauren Brannan, regional literacy specialist with the Alabama Reading Initiative. These revisions align with the newest state standards and emphasize cross-curricular, engaging approaches that connect literacy instruction with other core subjects.

Preparing Exceptional Educators for Alabama Classrooms

UM’s School of Education maintains a 100% pass rate on the Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) for graduates, and 100% of Early Childhood and Elementary Education majors exceed the minimum passing score on their first attempt. A job placement rate of 100% means most education students have a teaching position lined up before they graduate.

The University of Mobile’s Christ-centered School of Education prepares future teachers through hands-on learning, small class sizes, and personalized mentoring from professors who are leaders in the field. Graduates are known for their professionalism, effectiveness, and heart for serving students and communities throughout Alabama and beyond.

University of Mobile Announces New Pell Promise Scholarships for Fall 2026 Freshmen

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile announces a new Pell Promise Scholarship to help freshmen with financial need pursue a Christ-centered university education at UM, one of the Top 100 Best Christian Colleges in America.

UM’s new Pell Promise Scholarship is available beginning Fall 2026 for new freshmen who are eligible for federal Pell Grants. The Pell Promise Scholarship will fill the gap between a student’s Pell Grant, merit awards, Alabama state grant (if applicable), and any additional University of Mobile scholarships.

The Pell Promise Scholarship ensures an eligible student’s tuition costs are fully covered at the University of Mobile.

University of Mobile President Charles Smith said the new Pell Promise Scholarship allows even more students to access the kind of Christian higher education UM offers that equips graduates to impact the world For Christ & His Kingdom.

Bridging the Tuition Gap

“We know that many students with great potential and strong academic records qualify for federal Pell Grants but still face a gap in covering tuition. This scholarship is our promise to help them bridge that gap and make a UM education possible,” Smith said.

“Through the Pell Promise Scholarship, we are investing in students who will go on to live out the Great Commission in every field — from business, education and health care to ministry, the arts and more.”

Scholarship Eligibility

The Pell Promise Scholarship is available to new Fall 2026 freshmen who meet the following criteria:

  • Have an unweighted high school GPA of 3.00 or higher
  • Submit a valid 2026–2027 FAFSA showing eligibility for a federal Pell Grant
  • Meet other University of Mobile admissions requirements

Students receiving athletic or arts scholarships are not eligible for the Pell Promise Scholarship.

Over $14 Million in Scholarships

Charity Wittner, vice president for enrollment management and student success, said the Pell Promise Scholarship reflects UM’s mission to provide higher education that is academically strong, spiritually rich and accessible to students from all backgrounds.

“We see the incredible potential in students who want to grow academically and spiritually but wonder if a Christian college is financially possible,” Wittner said. “This scholarship is a tangible way we can say, ‘Yes, you belong here — and we’re going to help make it happen.’”

Over 98% of freshman at the University of Mobile receive financial aid and scholarships. Each year, UM awards more than $14 million in scholarships.

UM is named among the Top 100 Best Christian Colleges in America in the 2026 Niche Best Colleges rankings. UM also holds the #1 spot in Alabama for the best dorms and safest campus.

University of Mobile Receives Historic Gift, Announces Plans to Establish the Tom Elliff Center for Missions

MOBILE, Ala. – Thanks to a historic multi-million-dollar investment by generous donors, the University of Mobile is pleased to announce plans to establish the Tom Elliff Center for Missions. Launching in the Fall of 2026, the center is designed to equip students to live out their Great Commission calling around the world.

The university will name the center in honor of Dr. Tom Elliff, a pastor, preacher and missionary advocate whose ministry shaped churches and mission efforts throughout the world. During his tenure as president of the International Mission Board, he strengthened missionary care, renewed the IMB’s focus on prayer, and championed the call to reach the world’s unreached peoples. His legacy continues to inspire young men and women who sense God’s call to serve the nations.

Equipping Kingdom Leaders

“I am deeply grateful for the supporters who made this historic investment in our institution,” said University of Mobile President Charles Smith. “Though these dear friends insist on remaining anonymous, the Lord knows their name and continues to use them to advance the gospel around the world.”

Smith said the Elliff Center will help the university fulfill its Great Commission calling.

“At its core, this new center stands at the heart of our mission to equip Kingdom leaders for the glory of God and the good of the world. Mobilizing our students for missions remains central to that calling, and our prayer is that this center will equip and encourage every UM student to embrace their Great Commission calling,” President Smith said.

A Great Commission University

For decades, the University of Mobile has cultivated a strong Great Commission tradition — beginning each academic year with President’s Commissioning and culminating at graduation with a charge to serve Christ faithfully in every vocation and corner of the world. This heritage has shaped generations of UM graduates, reinforcing the conviction that every Christian is called to live on mission.

The new Elliff Center enables the university to deepen and expand this tradition by providing focused training, mentoring, and hands-on opportunities for students, including weekly gatherings that equip them for missions, quarterly forums with well-known missionary leaders and scholars, and mission trips that offer meaningful cross-cultural ministry experience.

Through this center, the University of Mobile strengthens its long-standing commitment to Christ-centered excellence and prepares graduates to serve faithfully in churches, communities and nations across the world.

The University of Mobile will soon begin a national search for the director of the Tom Elliff Center for Missions, a leader who will guide the center’s vision and oversee its programs.

President Smith noted that the university is seeking “a gifted and godly leader with extensive missions experience and a deep passion to equip our students to reach the nations for Christ.”

Those who wish to apply — or to submit letters of recommendation — may email a cover letter and résumé to humanresources@umobile.edu.

White Coat Ceremony Marks Next Step for University of Mobile Family Nurse Practitioner Students

MOBILE, Ala. – Thirty-one Family Nurse Practitioner students in the University of Mobile School of Nursing recently took a major step forward in their journey to advanced practice, donning their white coats in a ceremony that symbolized both professional achievement and spiritual calling.

Held Oct. 24 in Ram Hall, the White Coat Ceremony marked the students’ transition into the clinical phase of their graduate studies, where they will complete more than 600 clinical hours while continuing coursework that prepares them to serve as Family Nurse Practitioners.

In a moment unique to the Christ-centered university, each student recited the Advanced Practice Nurse Pledge — written by UM nursing faculty — committing to serve patients with excellence, humility and compassion rooted in faith.

“As our Family Nurse Practitioner students step into clinical practice, they are embracing a role that blends high-level skill with a heart for ministry through health care,” said Dr. Charles Smith, University of Mobile president. “They are answering a calling to serve people where faith and healing meet.”

Dr. Jessica Garner, dean of the Celia Wallace College of Health Professions and graduate dean of the School of Nursing, added, “At the University of Mobile, we see nursing as more than a profession — it’s a calling. The pledge reminds our students that the knowledge and skills they gain are gifts to be used for God’s glory and the good of others.”

The White Coat Ceremony included a keynote address by Dr. Jason Lee, newly appointed provost and vice president for academic administration at the University of Mobile. Previously, Lee served as professor of theological studies and director of the Center for Biblical Integration at Cedarville University.

Dr. Melinda McGaughy, associate professor of nursing, delivered the White Coat address to an audience that included family and friends of the honored students. The UM ensemble Sofree provided entertainment.

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile Classic Golf Tournament, the Christian university’s largest annual fundraiser, brought together 140 golfers on Oct. 30 for a day of friendly competition and a shared mission – to support UM students through scholarships and The Great Commission Fund.

The 27th annual tournament raised an historic amount during a fun-filled day at the stunning Magnolia Grove Golf Course, part of Alabama’s world-renowned Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

Celebrating Strong Partnerships

The event also featured opportunities for participants to meet University of Mobile students, including members of the UM golf team and UM Ambassadors, who shared stories of how scholarships and campus life have shaped their university experience.

Vice President for Institutional Relations Nathan Harris said the event’s success reflects the strong partnership between the university and the local business and donor community.

“The Mobile Classic is more than a golf tournament — it’s a celebration of what happens when our community comes together to make a difference,” Harris said. “Because of the sponsors, players and volunteers who gave their time and resources, UM students will continue to have access to scholarships and opportunities that prepare them to impact the world for Christ.”

UM Trustee Meeting Celebrates Record Enrollment, Campus Updates and New Academic Leadership

MOBILE, Ala. –The University of Mobile Board of Trustees celebrated a season of growth and momentum at its Fall 2025 meeting Oct. 24 as university officials reported that record enrollment, campus improvements, new academic leadership, and thriving chapel and student life programs are igniting a spirit of excitement and purpose on campus.

University of Mobile President Charles Smith began the plenary session with a powerful devotional from Hebrews 1:1-4 that underscored UM’s unique moment, message and mission.

“Though our context is always evolving, our message and mission remain the same — we exist For Christ & His Kingdom,” Smith said.

With this as his backdrop, Smith introduced several new strategies and initiatives designed to propel the university into a new season of Kingdom impact.

“Every one of these principles, and every one of these projects, is designed to make a difference in and through the lives of our students,” the president said.

“I could not be more thankful for the ways God is blessing the work of countless leaders across campus,” Smith said. “From record enrollment to new programs to athletic accomplishments and much more — God is using this team to make an impact For Christ & His Kingdom.”

Trustees Welcome New Academic Leader

During the meeting, President Smith appointed Dr. Jason K. Lee to the new position of provost and vice president for academic administration. Lee will serve alongside Dr. Pamela Buchanan Miller, vice president for academic affairs, starting Jan. 1, 2026.

Sharing his excitement, President Smith said, “Dr. Lee’s academic expertise and administrative experience will serve our students and faculty well as we continue advancing the University of Mobile’s mission to exist For Christ & His Kingdom. Together, this new administrative team brings both continuity and fresh vision for the next chapter of the University of Mobile.”

Lee said the opportunities at UM for innovation and stewardship in academic programs are exciting.

“The holistic nature of education for Christ and His Kingdom poises the University of Mobile to continue the life-changing effect on students that I received as a student at the university,” Lee said.

Currently, Lee serves as professor of theological studies and director of the Center for Biblical Integration at Cedarville University, where he equips faculty to integrate biblical truth effectively within their fields of study.

In addition to his academic career, Lee has served in various ministry positions, most recently as discipleship pastor at Heritage Fellowship Church in Springfield, Ohio. Among many publications, he is co-author of “Scripture and Scrubs: Health Care Practice as Servants of Common Grace” released this year by B&H Academic, and the forthcoming “Submitting to Christ Together: Baptist Dogmatics Ecclesiology” set for a 2026 release by Baker Academic.

Lee holds a Bachelor of Arts in religion from the University of Mobile, a Master of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland. Practical Training. Job-Ready Skills.

The University of Mobile Master of Athletic Training program emphasizes hands-on learning, individualized mentoring and a Christ-centered approach to healthcare.

“From Day 1, our students are learning, practicing and leading in real-world settings,” said Dr. Melissa Thomas, program director. “We combine rigorous academic training with practical experience so students graduate ready to make an impact.”

Clinical experiences begin in the first term and continue throughout the two-year program. Small class sizes allow for personalized instruction and close mentorship from faculty committed to guiding students’ professional and spiritual growth. The curriculum integrates classroom learning with practical training in UM’s nationally accredited human gross anatomy lab and cutting-edge simulation lab in the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice.

Students gain extensive hands-on experience across diverse clinical settings, including high schools, colleges, the Senior Bowl, general medical clinics, orthopedic and surgical practices, emergency medical services, industrial workplaces, emergency rooms, cardiac rehabilitation and wellness programs.

“We tailor clinical experiences to each student’s professional goals,” Thomas said. “Our students graduate not only with the skills employers want, but with the confidence and Christ-centered perspective to lead in any setting.”

A Flexible Degree. A World of Opportunities.

A Master of Athletic Training (MAT) degree equips graduates with advanced skills in injury prevention, assessment, rehabilitation and healthcare for physically active populations — preparing them for meaningful careers beyond traditional sports settings.

MAT professionals are in demand across a wide range of environments, including rehabilitation clinics, emergency rooms and urgent care centers, outpatient orthopedic clinics, corporate wellness programs, occupational health, military and public safety, fitness and community health organizations, private clinics, consulting and more.

This versatile degree allows graduates to tailor their careers to align with their passions and professional goals.

What do you like most about teaching at the University of Mobile?

One of the things I like most is the strong sense of shared purpose. The university emphasizes a Christ‑centered environment, which shapes not only the curriculum but also relationships between faculty, staff and students. There’s a commitment to both academic excellence and spiritual growth which creates opportunities to mentor students in their studies and in life.

How do you cultivate both excellence and spiritual formation within UM’s music programs?

It starts by trying to model a life of excellence and integrity — both musically and spiritually. Whether I’m conducting, teaching or mentoring a student, I strive toward professionalism and Christlikeness.

In every setting, I encourage students to see their music as ministry, not just performance.

Through touring ensembles, mission trips and partnerships with churches and organizations, students gain hands‑on experience in using their gifts for the Kingdom. These opportunities shape their hearts and hone their skills in ways no classroom alone could.

How do you help students grow as both musicians and ministers through ensembles like RamCorps and Jazz Band?

We emphasize that musical excellence is a form of worship. Students learn their craft isn’t just about impressing an audience — it’s about honoring God with their best. Whether playing locally or on a mission trip, students learn to connect with audiences and communicate the gospel through music. Every performance is a ministry opportunity, so we prepare both spiritually and musically.

Also, students are given leadership roles within the ensembles — section leaders, devotional leaders, logistics coordinators — which helps them develop responsibility, initiative and ministry‑minded leadership. They learn to lead both on and off the stage.

What sets the instrumental experience at the University of Mobile apart from other programs?

I believe it’s our spiritual purpose and real‑world mission. Students don’t just learn to play at a high level — they’re equipped to lead, serve and impact the world through their music. They have the opportunity to travel regionally, nationally and internationally, using their gifts to connect with audiences and serve in a variety of settings. These experiences provide a strong sense of purpose.

I would also say that our faculty are deeply involved in students’ lives — not just as teachers, but as mentors, to help them grow musically, spiritually and professionally.

You recently returned from a RamCorps mission trip to Cuba. How has your global experience as a performer and clinician shaped the way you teach and lead?

Performing and teaching while traveling internationally in different cultures has taught me that music is a universal language, and it speaks most powerfully when connected to our faith. I’ve seen how the tool and magnet of music can reach people in ways words sometimes can’t.

One of my passions is to help students see their God‑given talents communicate the gospel message. Traveling in general challenges students to be flexible, prepared and open to whatever God is doing in their life.

Musical excellence opens doors, but spiritual authenticity leaves a lasting impact. We go with a deeper purpose: to use our gifts to serve, not just to impress. We are equipping students to be artists who impact the world for Christ.

How do you live out the University of Mobile calling “For Christ & His Kingdom” in your work with students and missions?

I regularly remind students that our music has eternal value when it’s offered in service to God. Whether we’re playing in a concert hall or a small church overseas, every performance is an opportunity to glorify Christ and encourage the Body of Christ. I help students see that their instrument is also their pulpit.

Through touring ensembles and international trips, students see the world through a Kingdom lens. We go to serve, to build relationships and to share the gospel. These experiences teach students that missions isn’t a one‑time event — it’s a way of life.
