MOBILE, Ala.

The online master’s program in the School of Christian Studies at the University of Mobile was ranked nationally for affordability by OnlineU, a ranking site aimed at helping students make educated decisions when choosing an online degree.

The fully online program is taught by faculty members dedicated to training students to rightly interpret the Word of God and understand theological truth to strengthen the church and her mission.

The program offers students flexible options to pursue their online master’s degree in two or four years, making it compatible for graduate students working full-time or part-time, says Dr. Douglas Wilson, executive director of the Center for Christian Calling and professor of Old Testament and Hebrew in the UM School of Christian Studies.

The degree also offers flexibility for graduates working in a variety of settings.

“Our Master of Arts in Biblical & Theological Studies graduates currently serve as church planters, pastoral staff, international missionaries, military and healthcare chaplains, Christian school teachers and community ministry leaders. In addition, some of our graduates have continued their education to pursue Doctor of Ministry, Doctor of Theology, PhD, and EdD degrees,” Wilson said.

Southern Baptist Convention leaders, pastors and seminarians, plus a panel discussion featuring Christian business leaders, round out the semester’s chapel program that starts Aug. 20.

‘See and Savor Jesus Christ’

“At the University of Mobile, our greatest desire is to help students see and savor Jesus Christ — to invite them to study and trust His Word, and to challenge them to make an impact for Christ. Our weekly chapel services help us do exactly that,” said University of Mobile President Charles Smith.

Smith begins his second year as president of the Baptist-affiliated university that exists “For Christ & His Kingdom” with a mission of multiplying Kingdom leaders for the glory of God and the good of the world.

“Each week, the UM community gathers to fellowship, pray, sing and study God’s Word. It is one of the most vital things we do — not only because we hear the truth of God’s Word, but because we do so together, in Christian community, surrounded by like-minded students and colleagues who share a common faith and purpose,” he said.

‘Gifted and Godly Bible Teachers’

Under Smith’s leadership, the university’s chapel program is drawing standing-room-only crowds to experience impactful speakers and heartfelt worship led by The Worship Collective student worship team.

“I am grateful that our students, staff, and faculty will have the opportunity to hear from these gifted and godly Bible teachers,” Smith said.

“August can’t get here soon enough. There is no question about it. It’s the best part of my week,” he added.

“This degree represents more than your academic success,” Smith told over 300 graduates in a ceremony held May 10 on the university’s Great Commission Lawn. “It is a testament to your perseverance, discipline and sacrifice – qualities that will serve you well as you step into an exciting new chapter of life.”

Rooted in Proverbs 3:5-6, Smith challenged the Class of 2025 to: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”

Four Truths Taught at UM

In his message, Smith reminded graduates of four truths that serve as the foundation of everything taught at the University of Mobile.

• God loves you – “Not a smarter, holier, more accomplished version of you – the real you,” he said. “The question is not whether God loves you. The cross makes that clear. The real question is, will you trust Him to be who He promises to be?”
• God has given you profound gifts – “Your very life is a gift… the talents you cultivated here at the University of Mobile are gifts of God’s grace.” He added, “There will be times… when you doubt your abilities… In those moments… steady yourself with these truths: God loves you and has given you profound gifts.”
• God has called you to steward your life and gifts for His glory and the good of the world – “While the temptation is strong to use them for ourselves, our gifts are meant to bless others and point them to Christ. This is where you will find life’s deepest joys and greatest impact,” he said.
• Only Christ can satisfy your deepest longings – “As you enter this next chapter, commit to joining a strong local church. Immerse yourself in God’s Word. Cultivate godly friendships. Start a family. Serve your community. Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God. And as you do, commit to embracing our Great Commission Tradition here at the University of Mobile,” he said.

“We are proud to call you an alumnus of the University of Mobile,” Smith said in closing. “Keep the faith, stay the course and do not forget all that you learned here. Your Great Commission journey is just beginning, and we will be cheering you on every step of the way.”

Weaver Awards Presented

The University of Mobile presented its top two student awards, the William K. Weaver Jr. Excellence Award and the Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Excellence Award, to Logan Lipke of Orange Beach, Alabama, and Anna Olsen of Semmes, Alabama. The awards are presented to the most outstanding graduating male and female seniors for exemplifying the university’s mission through scholarship, Christian character, leadership and service. The awards are named for the founding president and first lady of then-Mobile College.

Lipke graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in music – composition. He received the President’s Scholastic Award and Area Award in Music.

Olsen graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in education. She is an Honors with Thesis Program graduate and received the President’s Scholastic Award and Area Award in Communication.

Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year Award

The Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year award is named after immediate past president Dr. Lonnie Burnett, the 5^thpresident of the University of Mobile. A 1979 graduate of UM, Burnett dedicated over 40 years of service to education in southwest Alabama, including 20 years faithfully serving the university as instructor, faculty member, dean and eventually president. Burnett exemplifies what it means to be an alumnus of the University of Mobile, living with godly character and seeking to serve the Lord in all aspects of life. 

The Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year award is given to a graduate of the University of Mobile who exemplifies those qualities in the highest regard. The 2025 Alumni of the Year is Teresa Williamson, president of Roberts Brothers Inc. 

Williamson is a 1990 graduate of the University of Mobile with a Bachelor of Science in business management and finance. She has served the greater Mobile community with distinction, Christ-like character and an unmatched godly integrity. 

“Whether it is volunteering in the community, engagement through the Mobile Chamber of Commerce, her involvement in and through her local church, or her leadership in real estate, Teresa is an example that all UM alumni and current students can look up to,” said President Smith as he presented the award.

Faculty of the Year Award

For the first time in the university’s history, a new award was presented at commencement:  the Faculty of the Year award. 

The inaugural Faculty of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Julie Hughes, assistant professor of nursing and simulation lab coordinator for the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice in the School of Nursing, Celia Wallace College of Health Professions. Using high-fidelity simulators, Hughes designs intricate simulations for students that allow them to experience real-world medical scenarios as they prepare for healthcare careers.

She recently brought the Blessing of the Hands to the School of Nursing’s Pinning Ceremony. This component acknowledges the responsibility that nurses shoulder in delivering care and compassion while reminding them they are never alone in their duties as Jesus empowers them to be instruments of His love and healing. 

Presenting the award, President Smith said, “Dr. Hughes points students and colleagues alike to Christ. In doing so, she has a profound impact on the lives of her students and their future patients.”

Trustee Resolution Honors Dr. Roger Breland

Dr. John Roger Breland, retiring executive director of the Roger Breland Center for Performing Arts, was honored with a resolution from the Board of Trustees celebrating his lifetime of music, ministry and mentorship.

For 31 years, Breland served as founder and director of TRUTH – one of the first internationally successful contemporary Christian recording groups. For the past 23 years, he played a pivotal role in shaping the University of Mobile’s Alabama School of the Arts. 

Throughout his career, Breland spread the Gospel message across the world, traveling more than 4 million miles across 50 nations, presenting over 12,000 concerts and producing 100 albums. Along the way, he mentored generations of young men and women who today are successful leaders in the music industry and churches around the world.

His legacy at the University of Mobile includes founding VOICES of Mobile, launching the beloved Christmas Spectacular, expanding the Alabama School of the Arts, securing funding for the Fisher/Brewer Recording Studio, and establishing the Roger and Linda Breland Endowed Scholarship.

Kathy Dean uses her passion for storytelling and “playing with words” to share the stories of people, place and purpose that make the University of Mobile unique. As associate vice president for university communications, she manages media relations, edits the TorchLight alumni magazine, and oversees university communications. A former award-winning journalist, she is a two-time recipient of the Baptist Communicators Association grand prize for feature writing. Kathy and her husband, Chuck, live with three extremely loud miniature schnauzers.

The 1627 Bible was on display during a reception Sept. 26 at Lyon Chapel where Holmes shared the story of its journey from “bits of a Bible in a box” filled with loose pages through a restoration process that spanned Ireland, Scotland and England. 

Holmes also spoke of the couple’s own journey from northern Ireland to the United States, and from self-described “non-committed Christians” to serving over 50 years in Christian ministry.

The University of Mobile played a central role in their journey. 

‘Thank You’

University of Mobile President Lonnie Burnett thanked the couple for the gift, which is now the oldest Bible in the university’s collection. It will be on display in the Center for Christian Calling in the School of Christian Studies at the Baptist-affiliated university.

“Imagine somebody in the 1600s with this very Bible in their hands, reading it,” Burnett said. “When you think about it, if that were a science book that was 400 years old, what a person read that day would be true – but it would not be true today, because we have found out more things. But what a person read (in this Bible) on that day is still true today.”

Holmes said the gift is a way to say “thank you” to the university as well.

“I said to Barbara, I want to give this to the University of Mobile. They took me in when nobody else wanted me. And I want to give it in honor of Col. Ira Matthews.”

Preach the Gospel

When Holmes was applying to Mobile College – after being turned away from three other universities because his Belfast educational credentials weren’t recognized by U.S. colleges – his Belfast accent sparked an encounter with Matthews, who was then assistant to the Mobile College president. 

The retired war hero had flown out of Belfast over Germany during World War II with the U.S. Army Air Forces’ 40^thBombardment Group. A conversation about Belfast, and a longer conversation about Holmes’ desire to preach the gospel – coupled with Matthews’ belief that the university “could not turn away a man God has called to preach” – paved the way for Holmes to enroll on academic probation. He thrived, graduated in 1975, then pursued graduate training in theology and psychology. 

A Scholar-Pastor

For over 40 years, Holmes was a solo or principal pastor, leading congregations from 30 to 4,300 members in Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, California, Pennsylvania and South Caroline. Later, he served as provost/CEO and professor of preaching and pastoral theology at Erskine Theological Seminary and moderator of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.

Former U.S. Senate Chaplain Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie called Holmes “One of America’s foremost scholar-pastors.” He has been invited to speak, teach and present at preaching and leadership conferences as well as on university campuses and at churches on six continents. Having been published on both sides of the Atlantic, he is the author or contributing editor of 20 books and hundreds of articles and has offered the opening prayer for a session of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. His latest book is “Leading the Way: Principles of Leadership Excellence for All Believers.” 

A Salvation Story

In another connection to the university, Holmes shared his salvation story, his call to ministry, and his wife’s initial reluctance to “be a preacher’s wife.” Then the young couple went to a concert in Mississippi, heard the gospel, and Barbara committed her own life to Christ.

The concert featured one of the very first contemporary Christian groups – TRUTH. The person sharing that message was TRUTH’s founder, Dr. Roger Breland, who now serves as executive director of UM’s Roger Breland Center for Performing Arts. At the reception, Breland learned for the first time of the role he played in Barbara’s life-changing commitment to Jesus Christ.

See What God Has Done

Holmes said he has kept up with his alma mater through the years.

“Over the years, I have watched the school grow, grow, grow. It’s a real privilege to stand here as an alum and see what God has done,” he said. 

“I am honored and delighted and thrilled that Barbara and I can give this to the school and say ‘Thank you,’” he added. “Because if you hadn’t taken us in, our lives would have been a whole shape different than what they have been.”

Emily Deal

Emily Deal is the social media specialist for the marketing and public relations office at the University of Mobile. Emily’s background is in advertising where she solidified her skills in design, quality assurance, and art direction. She earned a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in graphic design from UM in 2016. She is a devoted member of Mars Hill Church where she volunteers with the children’s ministry most Sundays. Some of her favorite things are wildflowers, live music and, most importantly, dogs.

Students who have completed at least three semesters at the university, completed at least 12 hours in religion and theology courses, and maintained at least a 3.5 GPA are invited to join the honor society.

Theta Alpha Kappa began at the University of Mobile in the fall of 1988. The society strives to bring a level of excellence in religion and theological studies.

Molly Grace Watkins

Molly Grace Watkins is the Content Creator for the Office for Marketing and Public Relations at the University of Mobile. She is a full-time student in the College of Arts and Sciences, where she is pursuing a degree in Communication with a concentration in Journalism and Broadcasting. A published author, Molly Grace loves writing and being in front of the camera. She is an active member and volunteer at Cottage Hill Baptist Church. She also enjoys listening to music, going on long walks and driving her friends around in her blue MINI Cooper.

The Present’s Scholastic Achievement Award was presented to baccalaureate students who have attained the highest grade point average while completing a four-year degree at the University of Mobile. This year, 19 graduates earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average during their academic careers.

Academic Achievement Awards were presented to outstanding graduates in each college and school who were recognized for academic accomplishment, service, scholarship and Christian character. 

The university’s two top student awards, the William K. Weaver Jr. Excellence Award and the Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Excellence Award, will be announced during graduation ceremonies on May 6. Approximately 330 students will receive degrees at commencement, which will be held on campus.

The graduation ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on the Dr. Fred and Sue Lackey Great Commission Lawn.

At the age of 16, Mark Willard felt the Lord calling him to a career in ministry. Following that call eventually led Willard to further his education at the University of Mobile where he pursued a Master of Arts in Worship Leadership & Theology. 

This unique master’s degree offers students the double benefit of serious theological study through the School of Christian Studies and practical, hands-on training in the arts, technology and ministry leadership through the Alabama School of the Arts.

Through this program, Willard was able to combine his passion for teaching theology and leading worship while diving deeper into both areas. As a result, he says, the deepened theological understanding gained during his time at UM has better equipped him to lead those he is serving. 

Willard recently began a new chapter as worship pastor at Englewood Baptist Church in Jackson, Tennessee, after serving 21 years at Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. Since starting his new role in June of 2021, Englewood has already released an EP of original worship music titled “Worthy Is Your Name.” 

Through his obedience in following the Lord’s call for his life, Willard has not only been able to serve within the local church in a musical capacity, but he has also had the opportunity to use his passion to develop the next generation of worship leaders through collaboration and mentorship. 

Q. What are some of your job responsibilities?

A. I oversee all aspects of worship leadership at Englewood. I manage, mentor and encourage the worship staff for the Highland and North campuses. I direct the choir, plan Sunday services and coordinate the training of interns and next-gen worship leaders. I also serve on the executive staff team for the church.

Q. Why was your graduate degree from UM helpful in preparing you for this role?

A. I’m very grateful for the graduate degree I received from UM because it really focused in on the things I’m passionate about as a leader…understanding and teaching theology and becoming a better leader in the organization.

Q. What are some of the most important things you gained from your UM experience? 

A.  I was able to take a deeper dive into systematic theology. I gained academic understanding of many of the facets of faith in Christ that help to shape the way we think as Christians. This, in turn, has deepened my abilities as a worship leader to speak and exhort the congregation or my ministry volunteers to be more like Christ is tangible ways. I have a deeper appreciation for the Bible and feel better equipped to communicate weightier principles.

Q. Along with directing music in a worship setting, you also are responsible for training interns and next-generation worship leaders. Why is this an important part of your job?

A. There are more and more open positions for worship leaders, and churches are struggling to fill them with skillful candidates. It is a passion of mine to help encourage young men to sing and praise the Lord through worship ministry. Seeking out and finding young Davids is very gratifying work.

In addition to mentoring students in worship leadership, I feel called to mentor college students, especially those who are called into music ministry. Teaching them how to build inclusive, yet relevant bands, praise teams, choirs and orchestras is what truly drives me.

They will carry the church into the next generation, and I want to make a mark on those young pioneers.

Claire Wood is a senior Strategic Communications major with a minor in Music. Along with interning for the Marketing and Communications Office at UM during her final semester, Claire is heavily involved in many areas around campus including the Alabama School of the Arts, Student Ambassadors and the Campus Ministries Team. Emily Deal

Emily Deal is the social media specialist for the marketing and public relations office at the University of Mobile. Emily’s background is in advertising where she solidified her skills in design, quality assurance, and art direction. She earned a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in graphic design from UM in 2016. She is a devoted member of Mars Hill Church where she volunteers with the children’s ministry most Sundays. Some of her favorite things are wildflowers, live music and, most importantly, dogs.
