However, not only did Allday compete in the sport, but she went on to play as an All-State pitcher her senior year.

Allday’s drive to succeed and her competitive nature has translated off field and helped her obtain her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Mobile, receiving the School of Business Achievement Award and the President’s Scholastic Award, and successfully running her own business, North Mobile Nutrition, for three years. It is this mindset that she passes on to her students to equip them to overcome any challenges they may face.

We talked with Allday about her love for the field of accounting, how it has aided in her business endeavors and her views on the University of Mobile as a former student.

Q: What is your professional background?

A: I am an alumna of the University of Mobile, holding a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration. I then went on to use my management, marketing and accounting skills to become a young entrepreneur and run a successful small business – North Mobile Nutrition. Even though I am no longer the owner, the business is still thriving under new ownership!

Q: Why did you choose to study and teach in this field?

A: I started to study accounting because I loved numbers. However, I quickly fell in love with the analytical, problem-solving and critical thinking side of it. When using these skills, I get to develop and analyze financial statements on my own, which sparks my interest and makes me feel accomplished.

Q: Why should a prospective student choose to study in your program at UM?

A: Accounting is critical to any industry or business. Because it is always in demand, this gives students endless opportunities and chances for career advancements once they graduate. The accounting program, with the help of our amazing professors, prepares each student for these opportunities. In our courses, we combine accounting theories and concepts with real-life scenarios so our students establish a great foundation of knowledge that will aid them both in and out of the classroom.

Q: How do you integrate real-world experiences and examples into your teaching?

A: One tool I use is case studies because they allow students to apply the concepts they have learned to real-life situations. I also incorporate discussion and analysis of current events to help students gain an understanding of what is happening in the industry today. In my entrepreneurship courses, I love to bring in business owners as guest speakers. Through these talks, they get to share their experiences and give students insight into running a business in the current economy.

Q: What do you believe sets UM apart from other institutions?

A: It is such a tight-knit community, which makes you feel like you are with family from the moment you step on campus. As a professor, this leads me to cultivate a friendship with my students, which is one of my favorite parts of my job. 

Students also have the unique opportunity to grow and be shaped both academically and spiritually at UM. As a former student, it was encouraging to know that while you are studying to go into your chosen job field, you are doing it for a higher purpose — to go out into the world and be the hands and feet of Jesus.

“This degree represents more than your academic success,” Smith told over 300 graduates in a ceremony held May 10 on the university’s Great Commission Lawn. “It is a testament to your perseverance, discipline and sacrifice – qualities that will serve you well as you step into an exciting new chapter of life.”

Rooted in Proverbs 3:5-6, Smith challenged the Class of 2025 to: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”

Four Truths Taught at UM

In his message, Smith reminded graduates of four truths that serve as the foundation of everything taught at the University of Mobile.

  • God loves you – “Not a smarter, holier, more accomplished version of you – the real you,” he said. “The question is not whether God loves you. The cross makes that clear. The real question is, will you trust Him to be who He promises to be?”
  • God has given you profound gifts – “Your very life is a gift… the talents you cultivated here at the University of Mobile are gifts of God’s grace.” He added, “There will be times… when you doubt your abilities… In those moments… steady yourself with these truths: God loves you and has given you profound gifts.”
  • God has called you to steward your life and gifts for His glory and the good of the world – “While the temptation is strong to use them for ourselves, our gifts are meant to bless others and point them to Christ. This is where you will find life’s deepest joys and greatest impact,” he said.
  • Only Christ can satisfy your deepest longings – “As you enter this next chapter, commit to joining a strong local church. Immerse yourself in God’s Word. Cultivate godly friendships. Start a family. Serve your community. Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God. And as you do, commit to embracing our Great Commission Tradition here at the University of Mobile,” he said.

“We are proud to call you an alumnus of the University of Mobile,” Smith said in closing. “Keep the faith, stay the course and do not forget all that you learned here. Your Great Commission journey is just beginning, and we will be cheering you on every step of the way.”

Weaver Awards Presented

The University of Mobile presented its top two student awards, the William K. Weaver Jr. Excellence Award and the Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Excellence Award, to Logan Lipke of Orange Beach, Alabama, and Anna Olsen of Semmes, Alabama. The awards are presented to the most outstanding graduating male and female seniors for exemplifying the university’s mission through scholarship, Christian character, leadership and service. The awards are named for the founding president and first lady of then-Mobile College.

Lipke graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in music – composition. He received the President’s Scholastic Award and Area Award in Music.

Olsen graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in education. She is an Honors with Thesis Program graduate and received the President’s Scholastic Award and Area Award in Communication.

Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year Award

The Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year award is named after immediate past president Dr. Lonnie Burnett, the 5thpresident of the University of Mobile. A 1979 graduate of UM, Burnett dedicated over 40 years of service to education in southwest Alabama, including 20 years faithfully serving the university as instructor, faculty member, dean and eventually president. Burnett exemplifies what it means to be an alumnus of the University of Mobile, living with godly character and seeking to serve the Lord in all aspects of life. 

The Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year award is given to a graduate of the University of Mobile who exemplifies those qualities in the highest regard. The 2025 Alumni of the Year is Teresa Williamson, president of Roberts Brothers Inc. 

Williamson is a 1990 graduate of the University of Mobile with a Bachelor of Science in business management and finance. She has served the greater Mobile community with distinction, Christ-like character and an unmatched godly integrity. 

“Whether it is volunteering in the community, engagement through the Mobile Chamber of Commerce, her involvement in and through her local church, or her leadership in real estate, Teresa is an example that all UM alumni and current students can look up to,” said President Smith as he presented the award.

Faculty of the Year Award

For the first time in the university’s history, a new award was presented at commencement:  the Faculty of the Year award. 

The inaugural Faculty of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Julie Hughes, assistant professor of nursing and simulation lab coordinator for the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice in the School of Nursing, Celia Wallace College of Health Professions. Using high-fidelity simulators, Hughes designs intricate simulations for students that allow them to experience real-world medical scenarios as they prepare for healthcare careers.

She recently brought the Blessing of the Hands to the School of Nursing’s Pinning Ceremony. This component acknowledges the responsibility that nurses shoulder in delivering care and compassion while reminding them they are never alone in their duties as Jesus empowers them to be instruments of His love and healing. 

Presenting the award, President Smith said, “Dr. Hughes points students and colleagues alike to Christ. In doing so, she has a profound impact on the lives of her students and their future patients.”

Trustee Resolution Honors Dr. Roger Breland

Dr. John Roger Breland, retiring executive director of the Roger Breland Center for Performing Arts, was honored with a resolution from the Board of Trustees celebrating his lifetime of music, ministry and mentorship.

For 31 years, Breland served as founder and director of TRUTH – one of the first internationally successful contemporary Christian recording groups. For the past 23 years, he played a pivotal role in shaping the University of Mobile’s Alabama School of the Arts. 

Throughout his career, Breland spread the Gospel message across the world, traveling more than 4 million miles across 50 nations, presenting over 12,000 concerts and producing 100 albums. Along the way, he mentored generations of young men and women who today are successful leaders in the music industry and churches around the world.

His legacy at the University of Mobile includes founding VOICES of Mobile, launching the beloved Christmas Spectacular, expanding the Alabama School of the Arts, securing funding for the Fisher/Brewer Recording Studio, and establishing the Roger and Linda Breland Endowed Scholarship.

These initiatives provide working professionals with affordable and high-quality educational opportunities at a Christian university to advance their careers.

New Lower Tuition for RN to BSN Online Program

The University of Mobile’s fully online RN to BSN program is now even more affordable, with a new lower tuition rate of $375 per credit hour starting in Summer 2025. 

Graduates of UM’s Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program are eligible for a special scholarship that lowers tuition even more to $325 per credit hour.

Designed for working registered nurses, the RN to BSN program allows students to complete clinical hours on the job, ensuring flexibility and real-world application.

Delta Mu Delta is an international honor society for students who meet the high academic standards required for membership. Candidates for undergraduate membership must have completed half the coursework for the degree and have a minimum 3.25 GPA. Inductees must rank in the top 20% of their class and completed a minimum of 24 hours in residence.

Chapter members have opportunities to earn scholarships and access to a network of current and alumni members from over 300 chapters in nine countries.

Graduate students must have completed at least half of the credit hours for their graduate degree with a 3.6 GPA or higher.

]]> President’s Scholastic & Academic Achievement Awards Presented to Class of 2023 https://umobile.edu/2023/04/presidents-scholastic-academic-achievement-23/ Fri, 28 Apr 2023 15:41:45 +0000 https://umobile.edu/?p=102847 MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile presented academic awards to outstanding graduating seniors of the Class of 2023 during an awards convocation April 26 in Dorsett Auditorium.

The Present’s Scholastic Achievement Award was presented to baccalaureate students who have attained the highest grade point average while completing a four-year degree at the University of Mobile. This year, 19 graduates earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average during their academic careers.

Academic Achievement Awards were presented to outstanding graduates in each college and school who were recognized for academic accomplishment, service, scholarship and Christian character. 

The university’s two top student awards, the William K. Weaver Jr. Excellence Award and the Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Excellence Award, will be announced during graduation ceremonies on May 6. Approximately 330 students will receive degrees at commencement, which will be held on campus.

The graduation ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on the Dr. Fred and Sue Lackey Great Commission Lawn.

]]> New Investment Group Teaches UM Students Investment Strategies https://umobile.edu/2023/04/new-investment-group/ Wed, 05 Apr 2023 14:19:11 +0000 https://umobile.edu/?p=102782 A new investment group in the Grace Pilot School of Business gives students, faculty and staff at the University of Mobile a fun learning environment that helps members better understand the process of investing in the stock market.

The Investment Group is led by Dr. Kathy Dunning, dean of the Grace Pilot School of Business. Currently, 16 students plus faculty and staff meet on alternating weeks to discuss trends in the market and evaluate how current investments are either healthy or are dropping in value.

Each member starts with an imaginary $10,000 to invest. Members use a website called StockTrak that allows them to “invest” their imaginary funds in real companies  they then follow on the actual stock market. StockTrak compares information on economics and the market, showing the change in stock prices, value and volume.

Through group discussions facilitated by Dunning, members track and evaluate their investments. They discuss which companies are successful in stock price appreciation and whether it would be better to drop a company or hold out, hoping the market will change and the value will increase again.

Shaila Gupte is one of the student members currently in The Investment Group. With the knowledge she has gained, Shaila says her next step is to actually invest real money in the stock market.

“These meetings with Professor Dunning are very interesting and help me to know what exactly to look at before investing in a stock,” Shaila says. She encourages other UM students, faculty and staff to join The Investment Group, which welcomes new members throughout the year.

Breylen Carter-Pugh always wanted to help others. So when this University of Mobile graduate was presented with the opportunity to serve people who have intellectual disabilities, he knew he could not pass that up. 

“Being able to advocate and fight for their rights is what motivates me to do the work that I do,” says Breylen, now director of Community Integration Support and Services at the Independent Living Center of Mobile. “These people often get looked over and not heard, so being able to effect change and see others happy is what I love about my work.”

His experience as a student in the Grace Pilot School of Business and a campus leader at the Christ-centered university prepared him to use his talents in the world of business and service. 

Throughout his college career, Breylen took advantage of the many opportunities UM offers, from faculty mentoring to becoming involved in campus activities.

“The University of Mobile has guided me every step of the way,” Breylen says. “We have professors who don’t just teach out of a textbook but have worked in these fields for years. Some of them still work in those places while teaching, which allowed us to get more insider knowledge that a book can’t teach.”

Q. What have you been up to since graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Finance? 

A.  Immediately upon graduating from UM, I enrolled at Colorado Technical University and in 2021 and earned my MBA in Healthcare Administration. I began working at Volunteers of America within the Intellectual and Developmental Disability department. I now work at the Independent Living Center of Mobile, while also working on my Ph.D. in mental health. I am currently the youngest person to hold the director position while advancing in the Intellectual and Developmental Disability field.

Q. How did studying at UM prepare you?

A. The faculty and staff in the Grace Pilot School of Business gave me a business mindset that I needed to run a program and company within my current job. I gained valuable skills in culture, values and how to treat/manage others. The University of Mobile gave me a foundation that I still stand on to this day – a foundation of faith, fairness and kindness. I am able to let my light shine every day by changing lives and helping others. 

Also, I worked in the student workforce on campus, and it prepared me more than I expected. Through that job, I had practice in interviewing and communicating with others. Because of this opportunity, I was better prepared for graduation and for presenting myself when I moved into my career.

Q. What did you like most about UM? 


A. What I liked most about UM hands down has to be the faculty and staff. I love how everyone cares about you, from the finance department and professors to the president of the university. You are not another number at UM, you are a person and everyone on campus knows you by name, not just your student number.

Q. What advice would you give to prospective UM students?

A. My advice to prospective students is to be open to receiving all the free help that UM offers, from the tutors to the services in the Student Success Center. I would also say to get involved in all the on-campus activities. Don’t just be a student – become a contributor to the student body. Doing this will help you make lifelong friendships and receive everything that the school has to offer, which is limitless.

In many schools, you might just be another number in a database, but at the University of Mobile they really saw me. When I had lofty goals that seemed crazy (taking 21 hours a semester…or taking a week during the semester for a hands-on business experience in New Jersey) they worked with me to make those things a reality.

Who in their right mind would bulldoze a Chick-fil-A? Brynn Gilbreath Albretsen did just that, and says she rebuilt it bigger and better, “complete with a dining room, playground and double drive-through.  From 2008 to the present our business has grown in volume by more than 400%.”

Albretsen says that in college, the faculty and staff in the Grace Pilot School of Business at the University of Mobile helped her pursue her dreams, even the ones that seemed crazy.  Since graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, she has taken that go-for-it attitude across the country, living close to New York City for a time because of her love for theater, buying her first restaurant franchise in New Jersey, and then moving back to Florence, Alabama – where she bought her current Chick-fil-A and leveled it before raising it again to new heights of success.

Albretsen says, “I enjoy the opportunities I have had to affect my community because of my service on boards and committees.” She currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the University of Mobile; the Children’s HopeChest in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and The Shoals Chamber of Commerce and Safeplace, both in Florence, to name a few.

Passionate about community theater, Albretsen also encourages young actors and actresses and production members through work on The Stanley Awards board that acts as the “Tony Awards” for her local community. She says, “We go to every local show (high school, college, and community shows) and come up with winners for all categories. It is a lot of fun and culminates with a big fancy award show.”

Q. What inspired you to enter the career you’re in?

A. I began working for Chick-fil-A when I was in high school. I was in management by the time I went to college. By my junior year I was the acting general manager. I realized early on that I enjoyed the industry and that I could make a lucrative career if I pursued franchise ownership. I really enjoy the opportunity to grow and develop young leaders and help them find their potential. I also enjoy the opportunities I have had to impact my community because of my role through service on boards and committees.

Q. Tell us about your job.  What is a typical day like?

A. Most of my day revolves around goal setting, vision casting, and coaching and developing my leaders to allow them to act on the daily operations of the business. I meet with my director team to help them with problem solving to elevate their perspective on the totality of the business and how to develop the staff that they lead. Additionally, I spend time in meetings throughout the community, either in a service capacity, or in intentional relationships to grow and challenge myself.

Q. How did you get involved in community theater?

A. At the University of Mobile I participated in a production of the Upper Room Dinner Theater. I’ve always enjoyed live theater. In the last several years I have gotten really involved with our local community theater. I have been in three productions, was the assistant director for two shows, stage manager for one show, and assistant set designer for three shows. I am currently in rehearsals directing my latest project.
