University of Mobile President Charles Smith to Graduates: Anchor Your Life in Christ

MOBILE, Ala. – In a powerful address during University of Mobile’s 2025 commencement, President Charles Smith urged graduates to “anchor your life and joy in the wisdom of God’s Word and the unshakable love of Christ.”

“This degree represents more than your academic success,” Smith told over 300 graduates in a ceremony held May 10 on the university’s Great Commission Lawn. “It is a testament to your perseverance, discipline and sacrifice – qualities that will serve you well as you step into an exciting new chapter of life.”

Rooted in Proverbs 3:5-6, Smith challenged the Class of 2025 to: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”

Four Truths Taught at UM

In his message, Smith reminded graduates of four truths that serve as the foundation of everything taught at the University of Mobile.

God loves you – “Not a smarter, holier, more accomplished version of you – the real you,” he said. “The question is not whether God loves you. The cross makes that clear. The real question is, will you trust Him to be who He promises to be?”
God has given you profound gifts – “Your very life is a gift… the talents you cultivated here at the University of Mobile are gifts of God’s grace.” He added, “There will be times… when you doubt your abilities… In those moments… steady yourself with these truths: God loves you and has given you profound gifts.”
God has called you to steward your life and gifts for His glory and the good of the world – “While the temptation is strong to use them for ourselves, our gifts are meant to bless others and point them to Christ. This is where you will find life’s deepest joys and greatest impact,” he said.
Only Christ can satisfy your deepest longings – “As you enter this next chapter, commit to joining a strong local church. Immerse yourself in God’s Word. Cultivate godly friendships. Start a family. Serve your community. Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God. And as you do, commit to embracing our Great Commission Tradition here at the University of Mobile,” he said.

“We are proud to call you an alumnus of the University of Mobile,” Smith said in closing. “Keep the faith, stay the course and do not forget all that you learned here. Your Great Commission journey is just beginning, and we will be cheering you on every step of the way.”

Weaver Awards Presented

The University of Mobile presented its top two student awards, the William K. Weaver Jr. Excellence Award and the Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Excellence Award, to Logan Lipke of Orange Beach, Alabama, and Anna Olsen of Semmes, Alabama. The awards are presented to the most outstanding graduating male and female seniors for exemplifying the university’s mission through scholarship, Christian character, leadership and service. The awards are named for the founding president and first lady of then-Mobile College.

Lipke graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in music – composition. He received the President’s Scholastic Award and Area Award in Music.

Olsen graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in education. She is an Honors with Thesis Program graduate and received the President’s Scholastic Award and Area Award in Communication.

Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year Award

The Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year award is named after immediate past president Dr. Lonnie Burnett, the 5^thpresident of the University of Mobile. A 1979 graduate of UM, Burnett dedicated over 40 years of service to education in southwest Alabama, including 20 years faithfully serving the university as instructor, faculty member, dean and eventually president. Burnett exemplifies what it means to be an alumnus of the University of Mobile, living with godly character and seeking to serve the Lord in all aspects of life.

The Dr. Lonnie Burnett Alumni of the Year award is given to a graduate of the University of Mobile who exemplifies those qualities in the highest regard. The 2025 Alumni of the Year is Teresa Williamson, president of Roberts Brothers Inc.

Williamson is a 1990 graduate of the University of Mobile with a Bachelor of Science in business management and finance. She has served the greater Mobile community with distinction, Christ-like character and an unmatched godly integrity.

“Whether it is volunteering in the community, engagement through the Mobile Chamber of Commerce, her involvement in and through her local church, or her leadership in real estate, Teresa is an example that all UM alumni and current students can look up to,” said President Smith as he presented the award.

Faculty of the Year Award

For the first time in the university’s history, a new award was presented at commencement: the Faculty of the Year award.

The inaugural Faculty of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Julie Hughes, assistant professor of nursing and simulation lab coordinator for the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice in the School of Nursing, Celia Wallace College of Health Professions. Using high-fidelity simulators, Hughes designs intricate simulations for students that allow them to experience real-world medical scenarios as they prepare for healthcare careers.

She recently brought the Blessing of the Hands to the School of Nursing’s Pinning Ceremony. This component acknowledges the responsibility that nurses shoulder in delivering care and compassion while reminding them they are never alone in their duties as Jesus empowers them to be instruments of His love and healing.

Presenting the award, President Smith said, “Dr. Hughes points students and colleagues alike to Christ. In doing so, she has a profound impact on the lives of her students and their future patients.”

Trustee Resolution Honors Dr. Roger Breland

Dr. John Roger Breland, retiring executive director of the Roger Breland Center for Performing Arts, was honored with a resolution from the Board of Trustees celebrating his lifetime of music, ministry and mentorship.

For 31 years, Breland served as founder and director of TRUTH – one of the first internationally successful contemporary Christian recording groups. For the past 23 years, he played a pivotal role in shaping the University of Mobile’s Alabama School of the Arts.

Throughout his career, Breland spread the Gospel message across the world, traveling more than 4 million miles across 50 nations, presenting over 12,000 concerts and producing 100 albums. Along the way, he mentored generations of young men and women who today are successful leaders in the music industry and churches around the world.

His legacy at the University of Mobile includes founding VOICES of Mobile, launching the beloved Christmas Spectacular, expanding the Alabama School of the Arts, securing funding for the Fisher/Brewer Recording Studio, and establishing the Roger and Linda Breland Endowed Scholarship.

Kathy Dean uses her passion for storytelling and “playing with words” to share the stories of people, place and purpose that make the University of Mobile unique. As associate vice president for university communications, she manages media relations, edits the TorchLight alumni magazine, and oversees university communications. A former award-winning journalist, she is a two-time recipient of the Baptist Communicators Association grand prize for feature writing. Kathy and her husband, Chuck, live with three extremely loud miniature schnauzers.

University of Mobile Graduate Wins National Athletic Training Award

Mobile, Ala. – Hailee Richard, a 2024 graduate of the University of Mobile’s Master of Athletic Training program, has been honored with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) 2024 Bobby Gunn Student Leadership Award for District Nine. This award recognizes her exceptional leadership and dedication in athletic training.

“Winning the Bobby Gunn Leadership Award is a tremendous honor,” Richard said. “It represents the growth I experienced during my time at the University of Mobile and the dedication I have to the athletic training profession. Bobby Gunn was a true pioneer whose leadership inspires me to make a difference.”

Dr. Melissa Thomas, program director for the Master of Athletic Training at the University of Mobile, said, “This is such a great honor for Hailee and, of course, for the University of Mobile’s Master of Athletic Training program. I am excited to see Hailee’s first NATA convention experience through a recent graduate’s eyes. I am so happy for Hailee and all the work she has put into becoming an athletic trainer. We wish her the best on her journey.”

Prestigious Award

The Bobby Gunn Student Leadership Award, named to honor one of the pioneers in athletic training, is awarded annually to one student from each of NATA’s 10 districts. District Nine, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky and Louisiana, selected Richard for her outstanding contributions and leadership.

As part of this prestigious award, Richard will receive an all-expense-paid trip to the 75th NATA Clinical Symposia and AT Expo in New Orleans, Louisiana, from June 25-28, 2024. She will be formally recognized at the Pinky Newell Scholarship and Student Leadership Reception on Thursday, June 27, 2024.

Transformative Impact of MAT Program

Reflecting on her time at the University of Mobile, Richard highlighted the transformative impact of the Master of Athletic Training program.

“The program not only prepared me for a career in athletic training by developing my clinical skills and knowledge, but also taught me the importance of serving others. The support from my professors and preceptors has been invaluable,” she said.

UM’s Master of Athletic Training program is a two-year, 62-credit-hour program that prepares students through both didactic and clinical experiences to sit for the Board of Certification Exam. UM’s CAATE-accredited program offers students multiple clinical immersion opportunities at local high schools, sports medicine clinics, surgery centers, physical therapy clinics and more.

Students have the opportunity to learn in the university’s state-of-the-art Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice located on campus, complete with high-fidelity manikins used for patient encounters. Baleigh Essary is the Content Creator for the Office for Marketing and Public Relations at the University of Mobile. Baleigh earned a Bachelors of Science in Management along with a minor in Graphic Design from UM in December of 2023. Baleigh is an active member and volunteer at More Life Church in Grand Bay. She is an avid photographer, and you will always find her with her Owala in one hand and caffeine in the other. One thing about Baleigh is that when she travels, 99% of the time it will be to visit her home-away-from-home, DISNEY!

University of Mobile Dedicates Ram Fitness Trail in ‘Exercise is Medicine’ Initiative

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile dedicated a 1-mile walking trail on campus as part of a campus culture of wellness that has earned UM recognition by the “Exercise is Medicine – On Campus” program.

Students from the UM Kinesiology Club, faculty in the School of Health and Sports Science, and UM President Lonnie Burnett joined the university mascot, Mac the Ram, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 28 for the newly designated Ram Fitness Trail.

‘Honor God With Your Body

The 1-mile fitness trail begins and ends at Weaver Hall and takes walkers on a picturesque journey down Pollock-Altmayer Drive, then encircles the campus center. A QR code gives walkers access to a campus map of the trail and distance markers.

Dr. Lori DeLong, dean of the School of Health and Sports Science in the College of Health Professions, said the dedication marks the first leg of what eventually will be a longer Ram Fitness Trail through the 880-acre campus.

She said UM’s campus wellness effort is in keeping with the motto for the School of Health and Sports Science: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. The scripture describes the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit and urges Christians to “honor God with your bodies.”

“Let’s work on our health and wellness together,” said DeLong as the ribbon was cut, attendees applauded and walkers took the first steps on the Ram Fitness Trail.

‘Exercise is Medicine’ Recognition

The University of Mobile is one of only 149 universities and colleges around the world to be honored by “Exercise is Medicine” for efforts to create a culture of wellness on campus. The Kinesiology Club’s annual health fair and health survey conducted last year helped UM earn bronze-level designation from the “Exercise is Medicine – On Campus” program.

The university was officially recognized on June 1 as part of the 2023 Exercise is Medicine World Congress, held in conjunction with the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual meeting. The American College of Sports Medicine, which is the world’s largest sports medicine and exercise science organization, co-launched “Exercise is Medicine” in 2007 with the American Medical Association.

UM Kinesiology Department

Heather Smith, visiting instructor of kinesiology, said students in the Kinesiology Department have been working toward the education of personal health and wellness of students, faculty and staff on campus.

“We also want to extend our efforts into the community and provide education to promote health and wellness, and to grow and establish more resources and opportunities to provide our campus with the tools to establish healthy living,” Smith said.

Q&A with UM Master in Athletic Training Prof Dr. Megan Harper

Experience is a great teacher, and that’s certainly true for college students preparing for a career in athletic training. As coordinator of clinical education for the Master of Athletic Training Program at the University of Mobile, Megan Harper said providing students with a variety of experiences not only benefits the student – it also benefits the community.

“The exercise science program and Master of Athletic Training program both offer a variety of clinical education sites as well as internship sites. We are able to utilize wonderful clinics and facilities all throughout Mobile. This has truly allowed us to really showcase our students to people in the community,” said the assistant professor of kinesiology.

In addition to being a UM professor, Harper also is a UM alumna. She graduated from UM in 2009 and worked as an athletic trainer for 10 years before coming back to her alma mater to be part of the new Master of Athletic Training Program in the School of Health and Sports Science, part of UM’s College of Health Professions.

As both a University of Mobile graduate and a professor, Harper has a unique perspective on what makes this Christian university special. Here’s what she said:

Q: What do you like most about UM?

A: The thing I love about the University of Mobile is the same thing I loved when I was a student here, which is the sense of family and community. Here at UM, the professors and students are able to get to know one another and truly make connections. I had professors who invested their time and energy into me because they believed in me as a student. I am so thankful and blessed to have been given the opportunity to pay it forward to my students.

Q: What does “Higher Education for a Higher Purpose” mean to you?

A: What “Higher Education for a Higher Purpose” means to me is preparing and equipping young adults with the knowledge and the tools to leave UM and make a positive and impactful difference in their communities. As professors, we have been put into positions to help our students find their calling, understand it, and prepare them to do God’s work once they leave the University of Mobile.

Q&A with UM Athletic Training Prof Melissa Thomas

Dr. Melissa Thomas believes athletic training is a calling. As program director of the new Master of Athletic Training program at the University of Mobile and a certified athletic trainer, she knows what it takes to succeed in the field. She says the best athletic trainers possess empathy, kindness, perseverance, humor, a strong work ethic, emotional intelligence, cultural acceptance, dedication, intelligence, determination, and a passion for the profession. Those qualities are evident in the first class of students to enroll in the new Master of Athletic Training program (pictured above). We asked Thomas about the field of athletic training and UM’s new master’s degree in the School of Health and Sports Science in the College of Health Professions.

Q: What can you do with a Master of Athletic Training degree?

A:The field of study focuses on prevention of injury/illness, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients across a lifespan and in various settings. The profession has expanded to include job opportunities in college and high school settings, physician extenders, industrial, professional sports, performing arts, and emerging settings.

Q: What is unique about UM’s Master of Athletic Training program?

A: The University of Mobile has one of only a few Master of Athletic Training programs within this region. It’s a two-year program with 62 credits for completion. Students are selected through an application process based off cumulative grade point average, personal statement, prerequisites, and an interview process. The program links classroom to clinical with an opportunity to learn from a variety of healthcare professionals. Some of the highlights of the program include: human gross anatomy class, clinical immersions, state-of-the-art simulation lab in the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice, clinical skills lab courses, and experienced faculty and preceptors. The program leads to graduates being eligible for the Board of Certification exam.

Q: You are an associate professor of kinesiology and a UM graduate. What is your background?

A: I have been full time at UM for 20 years. I played college softball at UM from 1993-1997 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in sports medicine in 1997 and Master of Arts in physical education with teacher certification in 2001. I completed my Doctor of Education in 2012 at the United States Sports Academy with an emphasis in sports medicine. I have been a certified athletic trainer since 1999 and worked in both the high school and college setting.

Q: We say UM is a place where students can “Know and Be Known.” What does that mean to you?

A: I think that faculty and staff do an incredible job in getting to know students. Faculty pride themselves in knowing their students. Over the course of a student’s time at UM, we seek out intentional moments to learn about their families, their home life, their passions, their spiritual path, their struggles, and their accomplishments. I believe we invest in student’s lives and can commit to helping them achieve their professional goals.

Q: What do you like most about UM?

A: I like the family atmosphere. It is what drew me to UM in 1993 as a student and what has kept me here over the years. The faculty, staff and students are some of the best. I firmly believe the first time a student drives onto campus for a visit, it becomes an “ah ha” moment for them. I have been told by several freshmen over the years that the drive into campus was when they knew God was calling them here for college.

Q&A with UM Golf Coach TJ Jackson

There is nothing better than being on a golf course when the weather is nice, says TJ Jackson. Fortunately, there are a lot of nice days in Mobile, Alabama, where Jackson is head men’s and women’s golf coach at the University of Mobile. Plus, UM’s 4-day academic week gives students Fridays off, meaning even more time on the golf course.

When he recruits student-athletes to one of the largest athletic programs in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Jackson said character, personality and strong faith are good starting points, then he looks for the most talented golfers who are committed to their academics.

We asked Jackson about his passion for golf and coaching at a Christian university where student-athletes are known.

Q: What is a typical week for student-athletes in men’s and women’s golf?

A: Commitment to being a student-athlete is the key. Our players have different class schedules which requires them to be both flexible and determined to achieve their goals, both academically and athletically. We typically condition twice a week and practice/play 4-6 days per week, weather permitting. It is difficult to get all the players together (we currently have 15 total players) for a team practice, so not having classes on Fridays is nice for that reason. Mondays through Thursdays we do mostly single or small group practices around their classes at the golf course. We are fortunate to have a lighted driving range on campus and Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove, which is about 15 minutes from campus, as our home practice facility.

Q: How do you help student-athletes balance their academic life and their athletic life?

A: First and foremost, our players are here to get their degree, so communication is a huge factor in scheduling practices around their class demands. Most of our players are very good at balancing everything, but sometimes they may need time away from golf for academic purposes. As long as they are taking care of their priorities, then I am willing to be more flexible.

Q: You have coached at UM for almost 6 years. What is your background?

A: I graduated from the University of South Alabama where I majored in English in 1989. I played collegiate golf at the University of Kentucky, Spring Hill College and South Alabama and then gave it a shot at professional golf for 5 years on a variety of mini tours. I coached the South Alabama women’s team for 15 years prior to my current position here at UM.

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: I am passionate about the game of golf and the history of it. As I have aged, I have become very interested in history, which is funny, because I didn’t like it at all when I was in school. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to teach the golf class on campus, KIN 201, and part of that is the history of the game which dates back to the late 1800s in the U.S. The game itself basically has remained the same, but the styles, equipment, golf courses and technology have allowed the game to evolve drastically.

Q: UM offers “Higher Education for a Higher Purpose.” What does that mean for student-athletes?

A: It means that not only are they receiving a quality education with a very good professor/student ratio of 1 to 13, but when they graduate, they are prepared to not just start a career and make a living, they also have a faith-based perspective to share with others as they make their way through life.

Q&A with UM Health and Sports Science Dean Lori DeLong

Dr. Lori DeLong loves athletics – the associate professor of kinesiology at the University of Mobile is a certified athletic trainer and has been a collegiate cross-country coach and assistant women’s basketball coach. She’s even served as an athletic trainer in the 2004 Olympics! Now, as dean of the School of Health and Sports Science in the College of Health Professions, she leads a program that prepares graduates to be known in a variety of movement-related fields, from healthcare and education to sports marketing and athletic administration.

We asked DeLong for an inside look at the School of Health and Sports Science and the variety of opportunities the field of study provides for students.

Q: Why should someone choose to study Kinesiology?

A: Kinesiology is the study of movement where there are so many professional choices for careers. For those who want to be healthcare providers, it is a great foundation to physical therapy, occupational therapy and athletic training, to name a few. For those who want to be educators, it provides health and physical education certifications to teach young children and adolescents. Exercise Science provides opportunities to work in fitness (exercise specialist, strength and conditioning coach or fitness instructor) or healthcare professions (cardiac rehabilitation or exercise testing). Sport Administration rounds out our undergraduate programs for those who are interested in athletics as their career choice, whether it be in sports marketing, sports media, sports agent, athletic administration or coaching. Our new Master of Athletic Training program prepares students to successfully pass the Board of Certification exam and enter the field of athletic training.

Q: You have taught at UM for 6 years. What is your background?

A: I am a lifelong learner in kinesiology. I began my study in adapted health and physical education teacher certification for my bachelor’s degree. I completed my master’s degree in exercise science while I was a collegiate assistant women’s basketball coach and cross-country coach. My love of athletics led me to completing my athletic training certification while coaching. I then completed my doctorate in pedagogy (the study of teaching) while teaching full time in an athletic training education program and covering multiple athletic teams as a certified athletic trainer. I was blessed to be able to participate in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, as an athletic trainer. Relocation to Mobile opened more doors for me, and I was able to be an athletic trainer in a D1 athletic program before returning to teaching full-time in kinesiology at UM.

Q: What do you like most about the University of Mobile?

A: The University of Mobile is a family university. People genuinely care and invest in each other’s lives. We want all of our graduates to be prepared for their professions as well as be prepared to be ambassadors for Christ.
